Two students have recently returned from an incredible cultural exchange trip to China, bringing back unforgettable memories, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of life beyond the UK.
Seren (Year 9) and Katie (Year 8) travelled to China in March as part of a wider group including students and staff from five other UK schools. This continues a successful international exchange programme that also ran last year.
A journey across three cities
The trip took students to three major locations - Beijing, Qinhuangdao and Baoding - each offering a unique insight into Chinese culture, education and daily life.
From the moment they arrived, the itinerary was packed. One of the first highlights was a visit to the Great Wall of China, an experience that set the tone for a week full of discovery. The group also explored iconic landmarks including the Temple of Heaven,
Yonghe (Lama) Temple and Jingshan Park, which offers stunning views across the Forbidden City.
Alongside sightseeing, students experienced the lively atmosphere of local markets, where they tried traditional street food and even practised their bargaining skills - a memorable cultural lesson in itself.
Learning in and beyond the classroom
A key part of the visit was spending time in Chinese schools. Students visited a range of institutions in Qinhuangdao and Baoding, including high schools and a primary school, giving them a valuable opportunity to observe lessons, meet local students and experience a different education system.
While the school visits were a highlight, some of the most meaningful moments came from time spent with local families. Our students were welcomed into a Chinese home, where they learned how to make traditional dumplings and shared a home-cooked meal together.
On another evening, they were invited out by Chinese students and their families, enjoying a meal and a guided tour of Baoding. These experiences offered a genuine insight into everyday life and helped build lasting international friendships.
Katie said, “It was an amazing experience that allowed me to develop a greater understanding of the culture. I made many new friendships with students in China which I still communicate with regularly. My favourite part of the trip was visiting the Yonghe Temple as it gave me a fantastic insight into Chinese culture.”
Representing Wensleydale
Throughout the trip, Seren and Katie were praised for the way they conducted themselves, showing curiosity, respect and enthusiasm at every stage.
Josh Hadfield, who accompanied them on the trip said, “It was fantastic to see our students embracing every part of the trip - the school visits, the markets, the food, and being guests in someone’s home. They were a real credit to Wensleydale.”
Looking ahead
The visit forms part of an ongoing partnership with schools in China, with plans already underway to welcome Chinese students to Wensleydale later this year.
Experiences like this play a vital role in broadening students’ horizons, helping them develop confidence, cultural awareness and a global perspective that will stay with them for years to come.
