We were delighted to welcome 91 Year 6 pupils from more than 16 feeder primary schools to Wensleydale School for this year’s three-day Transition Programme.
Moving from primary to secondary school is a big step, and we know it can bring a mixture of excitement and nerves for children and families. Our Transition Days are designed to make that move feel as positive and reassuring as possible, giving pupils the chance to experience life at Wensleydale before they officially join us in September.
Over the three days, pupils followed a typical secondary school timetable and took part in a wide range of lessons, including English, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Music and Design & Technology. They also explored the school site, met key members of staff and spent time with their new Academic Mentor Groups.
Just as importantly, the programme gave pupils the opportunity to start making new friends and building confidence. Students came from a wide range of local primary schools, so the three days helped them begin to feel part of their new year group and our wider school community.
A particular highlight was the support provided by our Year 7 Student Leaders, who acted as excellent ambassadors for the school. They helped pupils find their way around, answered questions, joined in with activities and offered reassurance whenever it was needed.
Josh Hadfield, KS3 Progress Leader at Wensleydale School, said, “Our three-day Transition Programme has been a fantastic success. It has been wonderful to see so many young people grow in confidence, make new friendships and embrace the opportunities ahead. We are incredibly proud of how they have approached this important milestone and look forward to welcoming them back as members of our school community in September.”
Feedback from pupils was overwhelmingly positive, with many saying they had made new friends, enjoyed trying different subjects and now felt much more confident about starting secondary school.
We understand that some children may still feel nervous over the summer, and that is completely natural. We will continue to work closely with families and primary schools to make sure every student feels safe, supported and ready for the next stage of their education.
When our new Year 7 students join us in September, they will be welcomed by their Key Stage 3 Progress Leader, meet their Academic Mentor, receive their timetable and spend time with their tutor group to help them settle into their first day.
We look forward to welcoming them back as full members of the Wensleydale School community on Wednesday 9 September, but first, have a great summer!
