Celebrating a hugely positive Ofsted Report

We're delighted to share that Wensleydale School has received a hugely positive new Ofsted report, recognising our broad curriculum, calm learning environment, strong community, and the wide range of opportunities we offer our pupils.

We're especially proud that inspectors awarded us a Strong standard for Inclusion, recognising it as a real strength of our school. No area of the school was graded below the Expected standard.

What makes this so special

Our inspection was carried out under Ofsted's renewed framework, introduced last November. This means Wensleydale is one of the first secondary schools in North Yorkshire to be inspected under the new system, which gives parents a much more detailed picture of school life - covering pupils' achievement, behaviour, personal development, support, and quality of education - rather than relying on a single headline judgement.

Early benchmarking suggests our results compare very strongly with other schools inspected under the new framework so far. Strong standards don't appear to be awarded lightly, and we're delighted to be the first secondary school in North Yorkshire, at the time of our inspection, to receive this recognition for Inclusion.

What inspectors found

Inspectors praised our curriculum as broad and well-designed, and noted that pupils typically focus and work hard in lessons. They found that pupils enjoy coming to school, feel safe, and benefit from positive relationships with staff and each other.

Our careers programme was also recognised, with pupils gaining access to employers, apprenticeship providers, colleges and universities. Almost all of our pupils move on to appropriate next steps in education, employment or training.

Beyond the classroom, the report reflects our wide enrichment offer — from sport, music, chess, gardening and craft clubs to the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force.

A message from our Headteacher

Headteacher Julia Polley said:

"We couldn't be more pleased that the report reflects what families see every day: a school where pupils are known, supported and encouraged to make the most of every opportunity. And we are especially proud that Inclusion was recognised as a Strong standard. For us, that is not about lowering expectations. It is about knowing pupils well, removing barriers, and making sure every young person has the support, confidence and challenge they need to succeed.

"We want pupils to enjoy coming to school, to feel that they belong, and to leave us with the confidence, skills and qualifications they need for the future. We are proud of the relationships across the school and the breadth of opportunities available, but we are also ambitious about what comes next. Our focus is on continuing to raise standards, strengthening teaching even further, and making sure every pupil is challenged to achieve their best."
