Can AI marking tools help students improve their GCSEs?

We're excited to share that we have recently completed a trial using artificial intelligence (AI) to help mark GCSE mock exam papers, placing us among the first state schools in the UK to test this innovative technology in a live assessment setting.

About the Trial

The trial took place at the beginning of this half term and was led by Deputy Head Charlie Barnett. We focused on subjects with extended written answers, where marking can be particularly time-consuming for our teaching staff.

Here's what we tested:

· English: The AI marked mock exams for our entire Year 11 cohort in both English Language and English Literature

· History: We trialled the technology with two classes for one exam paper

· Geography: Staff explored the technology using some Key Stage 4 assessments outside the mock exam period

We used an AI marking platform called TopMarksAI, which is being developed specifically for schools in the UK and the United States.

Teachers at the Heart of the Process

It's important to emphasise that teachers remained fully involved throughout the trial. The AI generated marks and detailed written feedback, which our teachers then carefully reviewed and compared with their own marking to assess accuracy and quality.

As Mr Barnett explained: "This was never about replacing teachers. The purpose of the trial was to explore whether AI can apply exam board standards accurately and whether it could help teachers provide more detailed feedback to students."

What Happens Next?

We're now conducting a structured review with our teaching staff to evaluate the results of the trial and decide whether the technology should be used again.

While the trial has increased workload in the short term, we believe the longer-term potential could include reducing the time teachers spend on marking administration, freeing up more time to support our pupils as they prepare for their GCSEs.

Our Commitment

As always we will take a cautious, teacher-led approach to any future use of AI. Accuracy, fairness and student outcomes remain our top priorities.

We'll keep our school community updated as we complete our review and make decisions about next steps.
